After many years of telling people the Australian immigration "service" is
racist, lacking professionalism, misleads people, etc... we now have
conformation by the staff it has a bad "image". Note they only say bad
"image" but the facts are they are racist bigots?

Public service staff surveys in australia always come up with this same type
of thing - especially just before new salary agreements are being
considered.
The image of the department was most likely assessed following a staff
survey question on 'what do you think people think of this department?'.
The immigration department has had a tough 2 years. They deported a woman
who said that she was from Philipines and wouldn't provide proof of identity
or tell the government her real name. They detailed another woman who had
no documents and who insisted that she had lived illegally for many years
(from Germany).
It is easy to blame a process or a department - but in any country - if you
cannot establish who you are - and if you are claiming to be an illegal
immigrant - deportation is a likely outcome. I think that the department
could have taken more care to assess the mental condition of the people that
it detained or deported - but if it had done this - it would have been
accused of holding foreign nationals against their will!!
the system is under review with new legislation being debated and a range of
safeguards being put in place. But still, if I claimed to be an illegal
immigrant and wanted to return to my country of birth - what can the
government do?
There's nothing to console Khun Pluto. He loves this stuff. "Neil Boss"
diligently searches the Australian media for such headlines and slavers
over them as he posts. Neil Boss or Nelly as his many detractors in
soc.culture australian affectionately call him (one of several names he

"pigskins", he hates Australia and Australians but strangely not enough
to leave and go back to India to live, which of course would mean that
the long suffering Ozzy taxpayer would no longer be supporting the

Having recently had dealings with the New Zealand Immigration
Service in Bangkok and some time ago with the Australian Immigration
Service also in Bangkok let me say that the Aussies are far more "Thai"
friendly than their counterparts in the Kiwi Immigration who without
doubt would be the most arrogant, unhelpful, moneygrabbing bastards you
could ever wish to meet.
Well, the immigration staff might believe they have a bad image but I doubt
the thousand Karen refugees recently granted immigration to Oz feel that way
!!
