Will I be given a visa automatically to stay in UK?

Question:
If I marry a person in UK who is on a student Visa, will I be given a visa automatically to stay in UK?

Answer:
You will not be granted permanent residence in the UK since the person you are marrying is not a citizen or permanent resident. You may be given the right to stay in the UK for as long as your spouse is entitled to stay (presumably until the student visa expires), but this may depend on your own immigration status to start with.

If you came into the UK as a visitor then it is unlikely that your status could be changed to the spouse of a student while you are inside the country and you may have to leave the UK temporarily to apply for a change of status . If you entered the UK with a status different from visitor then perhaps you can change status without leaving the UK. Ask the Home Office Immigration Directorate for further information.
