German passport would be send in 6 weeks with a bill?

Question:
My husband is a permanent resident of the USA, his German passport expired. He took a trip to the German Consulate in Chicago to get a new German Passport, he took along a letter from Germany stating he was now living here in the USA, along with 2 passport photos & the odd thing about this, is they did not collect any money, and DID NOT take his old passport, they said the new German passport would be send in 6 weeks with a bill?

Answer:
I have not had any experience with renewing my passport yet but I have contacted the German consulate (though the one in Boston) quite a few times regarding all kind of inquiries and found them very very helpful. If you really are suspicious about your husband's action you might just want to send them an email, inquiring about the process of renewing a passport.

Most likely they will give you a detailed list of requirements- including payment, etc. Their web site address in Chicago: http://www.germany- info.org/ In case you don't speak German either - on the web site it says they are allowed to keep their old passport until the new one arrives in 6-8 weeks. Then they have to send the old passport back with a payment in the form of a money order.
