Getting copies of Green Card forms filed with INS?
Question:

Is there any way for me to ask the INS for a copy of my forms?

I am really unhappy about this, if I could have afforded my own lawyer I could have gotten copies from him/her but of course the company lawyers for for my company, not for me.

Answer:

I am getting a Green Card through my company.

I asked our company lawyers for a copy of the documents (including Labor Certification, I-140 and I-485) filed with the INS, but they refused on the grounds that it was "against company policy to release these documents".

Talk to your lawyer, since the documents (at least the I-485) is yours.

The I-140 is the company's petitioning you. But the one that applies for AOS is you, so the document belongs to you.

In any case, you are certainly entitled to copies of both.

It'll be impossilbe to get copies from the INS.

You can get copies of documents filed with INS, eventually, by filing under the Freedom of Information Act. (It may take months or years.) The form number is Form G-639, Freedom of Information / Privacy Act Request, downloadable from the INS website.
