Question:
What kind of questions can one expect in an interview for a Green Card?
Will they really want to know my wife's face cream etc. a la "Green
Card"? I really have no idea what the names of the various creams etc.
are that she uses. Or are they playing a psychological game whereby if
you do know the answer then you must have studied it and therefore aren't
legit? And if they know that you know that it is a game . .
Answer:
It might be helpfull to see the movie " Green Card ".
You will get some good hints while you relax a bit. :)
In my experience (I went through this last year), as long as you can
reasonably prove that your marriage is legit they will not give you any
problems.
Here is an (incomplete) list of things to bring:
- statement of a joint checking/savings account
- lease showing both names
- car insurance in both names
- health insurance for both (e.g. family plan, one provide insurance for other)
- wedding pictures
- shared utility bills (e.g. your wife has telephone in her name, you electric)
- if you have a child together, bring birth certificate.
We brought a buch of stuff, and I was showing them one by one, until the guy
said: enough. This was about after the first 4 of the list above. They never
looked at the wedding pictures, but I do suggest to bring them. I also
brought affidavits from americans stating that they know us and know that our
marriage is a valid one.
My experience with the interview was very good. The guy was very friendly,
but I'm sure that depends on the person.
My wife is hispanic and I am white, which prompted the first question: who is
the US citizen (my wife).
The whole questioning did not last more than 5 minutes.
If your marriage is truely legit, you have nothing to worry about. You should
be able to gather enough paperwork.
I think all the checking/approval is done before the interview.
During the interview, he only went over all the paperwork and randomly
asked if such and such item is still true.
When he got to the "criminal" part, he asked me if I had any more to
declare since the form was signed.
Well sir, I did get 2 more speeding tickets after those I declared...
I dont know if it made any difference, but I had an attorney with me.
He had handled the whole GC process, but during the interview, he just
sat in the corner and was not involved, he was there just in case.
Your impending interview, if you and your spouse are truly living
together, you should have nothing at all to worry about. There may be a
few immigration examiners who are hostile or bigoted, but I suspect that
you will
be pleasantly surprised. Bring along just a few wedding photos, and let
the examiner know that you have a whole album at home.
