Question:
I am married to an American Citizen and we applied for my green card
2.5 years ago. I got a letter from the Houston INS office saying that
my adjustment of status has been approved and that I can come by their
office any Monday to Thursday and get my passport stamped with I-551
and that I will get my green card in the mail in the next 12 months.
The only thing they have asked me to bring is my passport.
I thought there is always an interview for a green card sponsored by a
spouse. Am I missing something?
Answer:
The INS reserves the right to waive interviews.......... apparently , they
have done just that in your case.
I have never heard of anybody getting a green card without some form of an
interview. Some people are much luckier than others. Some people have
horrendous interviews while others just breeze through it. My husband was very
fortunate. They asked me one or two questions about my financial assets since
I sponsored my husband. And the rest of it was a very pleasant chit chat.
I've never heard of one being waived for a marriage-based AOS before. Sounds
like Houston want to reduce the backlog! I'll be ready for the Dateline
program in a few months where they have a story about fraudulent marriages
in the Houston area because the INS aren't conducting interviews ;)
Well, I went to the INS office and there were a few others like me who
got letters asking them to show up at the INS office to get their
passports stamped. As to why they did not feel the need to interview
me and my wife, your guess is as good as mine. My wife and I got
married 3.5 years ago and we applied for my green card about 2.5 years
ago. Maybe the fact that we have a kid and all our assets are jointly
held and my wife took my last name convinced them.
I guess they must be trying something new. Given their backlog in
Houston, I think it is a good idea.
