Question:
what will one have to do after being selected in the dv 99 gc lottery? does
the applicant have to stay in the u.s. for a certain amount of time?
Answer:
There are two ways of processing if you have been selected. The choice
depends on whether you are in US (or will come) or abroad.
In you are in the US you can process your case here via INS, starting
October 01 of a respective year you come there to apply for adjustment
of status and they provide you with further instructions.
If you are abroad, you immediately fill out the paperwork you will
receive with the notification and send back to National Visa Center. NVC
after that is supposed to schedule an interview for you in the US
consulate nearest to your place of residence, mail you info on the date
scheduled and instruct that consulate appropriately. They also send you
more paperwork to fill out.
The second way is also not bad, but you can never know how long it will
take them to schedule an interview for you. Some year itmaybe done
inOctober, but this year there are lots of people still waiting for any
info amongthose who sent all the files back in August.
Overall, there is no statistic that would definitely show that any of
two ways is faster, better, bigger chance etc.
Go to the U.S. within 6 months after getting the visa.
As ong as you plan on living on the U.S. later, you can apply right away for a
re-entry permit that lets you leave for 2 years. You can probably get a
second 2-year period after that too.
