Question:
I have received my iimigration visa from Bombay consulate in India. They
have given me a packet with the visa which i have to submit at the
port of entry.
1.Will they attach some form to my passport stating my visa status?
2.How do I apply for my green card once I enter USA.?
3.Can I work immidiately or I have to wait till I get my green card
(alien registration card)
Answer:
When you clear immigration at the Port of Entry INS will place a stamp in
your passport that will read something like "Processed for I-551...".
This is temporary evidence of Permanent Residence. You can use this stamp
to apply for a Social Security card. I suggest you do this before seeking
work as the Social Security card is usually required.
If you are entering on an immigrant visa it will not be necessary for you
to apply. You will receive a passport stamp as I explained above. The
actual 'green card' will come to you by mail.
You can work immediately, however I suggest you apply for a Social
Security card first as explained above.
