Question:
I recommended the green dot 535 to some friends who wanted to get into
dvd.
A Harvey Norman store in Perth carries them and the sales woman said
it's an extra $100 for the green dot version. I wasn't aware of the
additional cost and for some unknown reason thought the multiregion 535
was a free bonus if you could find one.
Am i dreaming about getting the green dot version for the same price?
Answer:
depends on the price they were going to charge you for the non-green dot
version
you should be able to pick up the green-dot version for 599 or less at most
places, JB HiFi, Harvey Normans etc etc
Trevor Lees and Campsie HiFi probably have it slightly cheaper...
Harvey Norman wanted $599 for non-green dot and $699 (reduced from $729)
for the green dot 535.
Myers saleswoman didn't know what a green dot version was and just laugh
ed at the idea of a green dot.
Get it shipped to Perth from Campsie Hifi or Trevor Lees. Shipping
prices are nothing compared to the extra to have it modded in Perth.
Trevor posts in here, do a search from his email, and Campsie are
www.campsiehifi.com.au
well it wouldnt suprise me that she laughed, most salesman/woman in stores
dont have the first idea about the products they sell, except for what they
write on those cards next to the items
it always makes me laugh when they come an explain the product to you by
just reading the description cards, as if you couldnt read those yourself.
anyway
about the prices
depending on your location
there is trevor lees in melbourne(i think) which has the green dot version
for something like 590ish and the fully modded version for about 620
as does campsiehifi.com.au which is located in sydney
outside those
jb hifi have the green dot version for 599, slightly less if you haggle
but 699 is definatly at least 100 dollars over the top
you could always try and get them to price match with stores that sell the
green dot version for 599ish
Yeah that's what i thought. Alas, my eager friends ended up buying the
non-green dot 535 from Harvey Norman for $595 but i'm really pissed off.
I was hoping they'd get the green dot 535 for that price. The idea was
for them to borrow some of my R1 titles when they got the player.
Anyhow, i've emailed pioneer australia http://www.av.pioneeraus.com.au/
and asked for clarification on pricing for both versions.
Btw, getting a dvd player modded in Perth is a lot more expensive than
having it done on the east-coast.
If the player was for myself then i would get it shipped from Trevors to
Perth, but it's for an electronics illiterate couple who would ring me
first if there was ever a problem with the player and then organise
repairs. I'd probably cop some of the blame for it too.
You know how it is, you try to get a good deal for some friends and it
backfires.
That happened to me when i got a good deal on a computer from Perth for
some other friends who live in the country.
We spent hours on the phone later sorting out software problems. It
would have been easier for me if i'd let them buy from their local town
store. I can do without anymore hassles like that, but i do want to make
certain that my friends weren't lied to or cheated by Harvey Normans.
Mate, forget lending them anything. If they didn't take your advice
tell them hard luck and certainly don't get worried if you can't lend
them something of yours.
They'll figure it out. They may even figure out that you should never
buy anything from Hardly Normal without doing the research elsewhere first.
I got a green dot 535 for $599 a couple of months back. They should be
the same price but Hardly Normal and I think Dick Smith Powerhouse both
charge extra for the 'Bonus Multiregion!'
Argh!!!!!! The tyranny of Perth's isolation................
Higher freight costs, etc, = higher component costs, but who in their
right mind shops at Hardly Normal anyway????????
My friends are the typical young aussie couple with the 2.2 kids and buy
all their appliances from big major stores using the 12 months interest
free terms. They don't even price compare. *shrug* . I tried to tell
them to wait so that i could get it cheaper from one of the hifi shops.
Would you please STOP changing the headers. The point of keeping the
same header is so newsreaders can keep treads together.
you might want to ask her why its an extra $100 for the "green dot" version,
because if she says its because its a multizone, you might want to pass her
details on to the relevant authorities
