If you are sponsored as a fiance or a spouse you do not need to meet selection criteria only pass a medical and criminal/security check. If a fiance(e) wishes to sponsor before marriage, the undertaking and supporting documents can be filed in CPC Mississauga. The sponsor will have to meet an income test which is not applicable to a spouse. The Immigration Regulations provide that in the case of a sponsored spouse or dependant minor child, the visa officer is not required to form an opinion as to whether or not the sponsor meets the LICO amounts. However a case may be refused where it is likely that any immigrant is likely to become a public charge (i.e. welfare) upon entry to Canada and that there have not been adequate support arrangements made for the intending immigrant. Hence the finacial information must be supplied even in the case of spousal sponsorships to determine the adequacy of reception arrangements in the event that the visa officer concludes the sponsored spouse is likely to become a public charge.
