| Is there a way
to check out the status of my application

Question:
I have a question about pitfalls of
the naturalization process. Here is
the chronology of the events : Jan
92 - I became a US permanent resident
Oct 93 - I got married (my ex-spouse
is a permanent resident of USA since
Feb 94 , the status was obtained independently
of the marriage). Oct 98 - divorce
Dec 98 - I applied for naturalization
Sep I have got a confusing letter
of response from INS stating that
my application is incomplete. The
INS letter is shown below. I've talked
to INS official, and the response
was "you have to wait, we can provide
no information on status of your application,
the whole process may take years".
Could you tell me what that letter
means? Maybe someone has been in a
similar situation? Is there a way
to check out the status of my application
? (I've heard stories about lost files,
misplaced documents etc. ) Anything
I can do except waiting ?
Answer:
There is nothing to worry about. The instructions are pretty straightforward,
bring everything they asked for to the interview once you get scheduled for
it.
There is nothing to worry about - INS requested these documents presumably because they want to verify that you did not engage in polygamy and did not skip out on child support payments, did not engage in spousal abuse and things like that. Some of them (polygamy especially) would disqualify you from becoming a citizen, others might present obstacles (skipping out on child support payments and spousal abuse may be evidence that you are not of good moral character, a requirement for naturalization). It is most likely NOT related to your marriage or your divorce, since neither would affect your eligibility for citizenship.
