Immigration questions on services for the UK

Question:
Could someone please point me in the direction of a FAQ or web site that has details regarding working, and staying in the UK for a New Zealander. Also earnings and the tax system.

Answer:
For general information on the most common means of admission to the UK (both permanent and temporary residency) see the websites below. Much of the information refers to people of any nationality, but there are two special concessions for certain categories of Commonwealth citizens.

One is that if they are within a certain age range they may come to the UK on a working holiday: this does not lead to permanent residence. The second is that if they have a parent or grandparent born in the UK (including Ireland when it was part of the UK), they may come to the UK to live and work without requiring a work permit. (Incidentally anyone with a grandparent born in a small number of European countries, including Ireland, is entitled to citizenship of that country which then confers the right to live and work in the UK due to European Union regulations). or

http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/ind/hpg.htm Foreign and Commonwealth Office: http://www.fco.gov.uk/travel/visa.asp Britain in the USA website (relevant to both US and non-US citizens): http://www.britainusa.com/bis/visa/visa.stm

and see also some of their factsheets: http://www.britainusa.com/bis/fsheets/index.htm Immigration Advisory Service: http://www.vois.org.uk/ias/html/HOMEPAGE.HTML BCL Immigration Services: http://www.bclimser.demon.co.uk/bclukimm.htm or http://www.visa-free.com/index.htm Electronic Immigration Network: http://www.ein.org.uk/ Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants: http://www.jcwi.org.uk/ Gherson & Co. (solicitors whose website provides immigration information): http://www.gherson.com/ For migration based on employment, several of the above websites provide information on work permits and the following sites are specifically concerned with work permits. There might be exceptions to some of the minor rules in some of these documents.

The Overseas Labour Service which administers work permits and training permits provides details on its website: http://www.dfee.gov.uk/ols/index.htm Also see: http://www.workpermit.com/ [part of BCL Immigration Services] http://www.taps.com/broch/Global_Visas/workpermit.htm http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/admin/wp/wperm.htm [written with academic and research staff in mind] Visa and entry clearance application forms required for certain categories of entrant may be downloaded from the Foreign and and Commonwealth Office website and also from the websites of some UK embassies and high commissions.

Immigration application forms for use within the UK may be downloaded from the Immigration and Nationality Directorate website. Links to other relevant UK government websites such as Inland Revenue (taxation) and Customs and Excise can be found from the UK government web portal: http://www.open.gov.uk/ As far as I know, this refers to the area that is now the Republic of Ireland before the 31 March 1922. Northern Ireland is of course part of the UK still.
