Does I need to obtain a new Russian passport to travel abroad?

Question:
Does anyone know what the options are for a Russian citizen who is:

a) married to a US citizen and is in the US

b) is a [newly appointed] greencard holder

c) BUT their Russian passport is long since expired!

d) they want to visit family in Russia Does she have to obtain a new Russian passport to travel abroad? Is there such a thing as a "U.S. passport for greencard holders"? If she has to obtain a Russian passport, does she have to go to Russia or are new ones given at the Russian consolute?

Answer:
You need a travel document of some sort, either a passport or another travel document such as a re-entry permit. You don't actually need a travel document to get out of the US or to be readmitted. Your GC alone will do that if you are gone for less than a year. But you may have trouble getting into other countries and out of Russia without a passport or other travel document. The Russian consulate should be able to give you a passport.
