Question:
In the US, we can just get them from the Post Office. Is is that easy in
Canada?? As far as photographs (for immigration and for passports), where can
he go? His home is out on the middle of Northern Exposure, where I believe
there is *one* professional photographer in the whole city and surrounding
areas!!! (Too bad there can't be a Kinko's everywhere!) Any ideas of places
that generally make Immigration and Passport photograph services available?
Answer:
Just a simple question -- my fiancé is currently out in the bush fighting the
forest firest ravaging Ontario and Alberta. He wants to get a passport
application and photographs ASAP, but he hasn't a clue where to start to look
for one.

There's a relatively large city about an hour away from his home that he can
make it to; otherwise we'll just wait until his contract with the MNR ends and
we can spend some time in Thunder Bay.
Applications are normally available at the post office, and can also
be obtained by mail, and through the Passport Office web site:
http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/passport/passport.htm
They will have all the info needed on the site.
Canadian passport applications are submitted by mail, or in person at
a Passport Office point of service. The office in Thunder Bay is:
Suite 406
Royal Insurance Building
28 Cumberland Street North
*THUNDER BAY, Ontario
Office hours: 08:45 - 16:30
They will have applications there, as well.
The "Eligible Guarantor" has to have known the applicant for a period
of YEARS [as I recall, it is either two or three]. Your fiancee
probably doesn't have anyone working with him who has known him long
enough AND is on the list of qualifying occupations, so he will likely
have to wait until he return home. Instructions are on the
application form.
Many photo stores can do the passport pictures. They are done with
similar equipment to US passport photos. Two photos are needed.
The large city will most likely have somewhere that can do it.
You can pick up a passport application at any travel agency or look in
your phone book under Canadian Gov't and have them mail you one. The
photos...welll...again...check your phone book under photographers,
etc. Some motor vehicle offices offer this service also. The travel
agency may be able to help with this too. Its a fairly quick process
once you get the documentation and photos in order.
