U.S. Passport Application Form Question (DS-11)?
Question:

I have a question about applying for U.S. Passport (Form DS-11) once naturalization is complete.

Item 6. says "Alien Registration No. (if applicable)".

My question is: is this applicable in the case of a newly naturalized citizen? Should we fill this field out with the (former) A#? Or now that the applicant is a naturalized citizen, it is no longer applicable and should be left blank?

Answer:

I was also wondering about that line when applying for US Passport -- but I noticed that my Naturalization Certificate has my old A-number as well, and since only US citizens can apply for US Passport, I figurred that must be what they want. So, I just filled that line with my old A- number. The cleck in post office did not say anything about this, and I got my passport in less than 2 weeks...

My personal opinion would be that it is applicable. Just as answering some of the questions on other CIS forms that require either a None or N/A, you should ask yourself: do I have one or none? You have an Alien Registration No. so it should be entered. Just as if the CIS papers ask for number of children, you would put None not N/A. Assuming off the top of my head that if the passport office wanted to verify the authenticity of the naturalization certificate, they would be able to get your status from CIS by use of your Alien Reg. No. I had Jim, my husband, ask himself that question when completing his passport after naturalization and he put his on the line and got his passport.

Unless you were a native born, child born through US citizen parents or a derivative US citizen, more likely have an A# ! It references your record of naturalization.
