Cars?
Question:

I was just thinking, isn't it kind of strange how all Asians buy (and are *patriotic* to) Japanese cars? Doesn't seem to make much sense to me, considering how Japan already tried to wipe out China twice this century. "Don't buy bread from the baker who throws rocks at you"? (shrug) Just thought I'd try to start a fresh thread even if it's not really relevant to anything...

Answer:

Yeah, it's just weird that it seems like a patriotic thing though. Anyone else think that "rice boys" (dumbasses who "fix up" their Integras etc.) are disgracing our race and our cars? I sure do...

I don't care wether it's Japanese or not...as long as the product works and is reliable. Sony TV is an example.

I think it depends on who and when any particular asian living in N.Amer are. For example, many Chinese or Koreans who immigrated to N.Amer back in the 50's 60's tend to stick to American autos (Like my Father's generation.) I've noticed on the other hand the younger generation, where they haven't see first hand what the Japanese did, will buy Japanese cars like Honda, Toyota, Nissan because they are more refined then domestics. Many older Hong Kong Chinese immigrants tend to drive Japanese as well. I myself drive a Honda, and I love the ES300. The quality and fit and finish is wonderful. Mind you it's not just asians that know this. The majority of N.Americans tend to share this view, A Lexus is just plain better than a Chevy.

Btw, just to point something out, Jung Pach, immigration from Asia to America wasn't opened up until the 1965 Immigration Act. Until that time, Asians were subject to the 1924 National Origins Act, which pretty much limited immigration from Asia to zero (except for, after WWII & the Korean War, some war brides & adoptees). So, maybe the statement above should be rephrased to "...back in the 60s & '70s..."

Doesn't seem like it to me, no more than buying televisions, clothes, furniture, etc., are. A car is obviously a more expensive purchase, but if I guess correctly, you are an American, and I find it strange that you feel twinges of patriotism for China when thinking of buying a car and considering the country of origin of the manufacturer (especially since many/most of those Japanese auto companies make many of the cars or the car parts in America or Mexico, etc.).

Not at all, unless you also think that teenagers who drive '68 Ford Mustangs or VW Bugs are disgracing Generation X and that blacks who drive Cadillacs disgrace other blacks and that white yuppies who drive BMWs disgrace white America.

Well they sure cause a laugh among everyone who doesn't do it, because it's all about making the cars look and sound obnoxious while still being slow as hell. "Rice boys" also tend to be the most racist and create more stereotypes. I've heard from AFs who says this rice boy subculture is one of the biggest reasons why they "jump ship and go for white boys" (quote from an AF).

Just wondering, but how come you think lowering a car and fixing up the stereo system is "obnoxious?" Young Asians aren't the only ones who do this...this was popularized long ago by young black males and also future white frat boy high school guys.

Again, I don't know if you addressed my point, but how come you find Asian guys who soup up their Acuras or ZXs offensive, but you don't find black guys who soup up their Cadillacs or white professional 30somethings who spit & polish their BMWs offensive? Or, rich suburban housewives who drive very slowly in their Jaguars (bought by their husbands) offensive?

In the above statement, both you and the quoted girl are wrong. I know the type of Asian guy you are referring to, and, seeing as how almost to a letter they only date Asian girls (and almost to a letter they all have some Asian girl(s) who looks pretty good by their side), I can't agree at all with your statement. There are, of course, like yourself, female counterparts who are turned off by that hip hop look & feel, but to blame a personal & sexual choice on the existence of a group of guys who could probably care less about this kind of girl's opinion is ludicrous.

I do... Just thought (or was hoping) Asians would be above that crap, that's all.

A nice car stereo is only obnoxious if it is turned up to full volume so that everyone in a mile radius can hear it when trying to sleep.

most are. obviously we can't all be. too much money, time on your hands, some are going to go obviously to conspicuous consumption.

i actually wonder if this conspicuous consumption is higher among asian americans. sort of like the "new money" stereotype- seeing how much the society values wealth, they go over the top to prove that they have it, maybe thinking it will insulate against racism or whatever.

i see few other groups displaying as much gucci/fendi/prada/armani/dkny/tommy/ck logowear and accessories. can anyone explain this to me?

Lowering a car is illegal in many states, so are the colored driving/fog lamps, dark tinted windows, loud exhaust system (in fact, in California. It's totally illegal to modify the engine at all. Unless those items are certified by the State's EPA. Now, they're trying to outlaw the popular "chip tunings" as well.) And modifying the exhaust system is totally illegal under California's law as well.

A loud stereo can gets you a few tickets as well. In many communities, if others can hear your stereo playing over at a certain distance. Loud music is noise pollution.

well in DC alot of people including asian americans are into theconspicuous consumption deal. expensive cars, fancy clothes, jewlry, going out to expensive restaurants, etc.
