Question:
Has anyone been in this situation? I'm a year away from becoming a US
citizen. And I'd like to apply for Canada immigration. Is it OK to do
both at the same time? Or is it better to get US citizenship first?
For many reasons, I'd like to apply for Canada immigration as soon as
possible. But I certainly don't want it to interfere with US
citizenship.
I'm not asking for any provide legal advice. It takes anywhere between 12 to 36 months to get Canadian residency. I
just got mine a few months ago. If you are already a US resident, why
bother applying for the Canadian program? It just does not make sense.
Why would you want to wait and worry about gaining Canadian Residency
while you are already in line for US citizenship?
Answer:
I do not believe it will interfere with your US status. It will only
interfere with your US status if you become a Canadian citizen.
Becoming a citizen takes 3 years after you get your Canadian residency
card and have met canadian residency requirements.
Just hang in there. Forget about a Canadian backup and concentrate on
what you have at hand. Seems like your almost through. There are many
people whose green cards are years if not decades away!
I won't explain the reason for applying for
Canada residency but I do appreciate the infor.
Once he becomes a US citizen he can freely immigrate to Canada and become a
Canadian citizen, while keeping US citizenship.
There can be (and often are) problems holding permanent residence in the US
and Canada at the same time. However there is no problem with citizens
of one country (US/Canada) holding permanent residence or citizenship of
the other.
