Question:
I am working on a project for my 7th grade history project. The
theme is immigration, and I have elected to write about the
Vietnamese immigration to the U.S. following the Vietnam War.
I would appreciate any information, personal experiences, pointers
to sources, references etc?
Answer:
I believe that it would be referred to as a mass exodus more than
simple immigration. Many Vietnamese may have come to the U.S. with
the help of the American Government due to their involvement with
the Military, while most others took that were not that lucky, came
the long route, by boat!
Point your browser on "Boat People" and see what you come up with!
Too much for a 7th grader do you not think so?
The Vietnamese did not immigrate to the U.S. after the war. The
first wave in 1975 had about 100,000 people, mostly military,
government and elite escaping from the communist. The second wave
1978, 1981 mostly Chinese ethic as refugees. Next wave 1982 to 1989
mostly political asylum seeker who just had been released from the
concentration camps later the former sponsor the later and thus that
is the first time immigration actually applied. the last wave
happened from 89 til now is not immigrant either but longtime
concentration camps resident who come here with the special program
of the U.S. government call humanitarian operation and they are
political refugees
